How to Avoid Water Damage When Leaving Your Hidden Hills, CA Home for Summer Vacation

We are getting ready to enter into the busiest travel months of the year. With everyone getting ready to leave town, no one wants to come home to water damage that could have been avoided while they were out of town. The experts at Prestige Construction & Design are here to share some tips that will hopefully help you avoid costly water damage that happens while you are on vacation this summer.

Preparing Your Home for Extended Absence; Inspect Home Before Leaving Town

You will want to really check your home over before you leave town this summer. This means checking anywhere that has water hooked up to it; refrigerator, underneath sinks, toilets, etc. You need to inspect the pipes for any cracks or signs of rust on them. Your windows and doors should be sealed in case of severe weather you could end up facing. If you have any hoses that are hooked up to the house, they should be evaluated as well as hoses connected to appliances like your dishwasher, washer and fridge for any sign of damage or heavy wear.

Check Gutter System for Clogs

There is a good chance that some rainfall may happen while you are gone. It will be vital that your gutter system is in good working order. This means that it shouldn’t have any blockages in it caused by leaf litter and other debris. Make sure that water is flowing at least 10 feet away from your home.

Replace the Refrigerator Water Supply Lines

If your refrigerator is getting water from plastic hoses, it will be worth switching over to stainless steel. While these hoses cost more money, they are much less likely to cause any leaking than the plastic hoses are. It is worth making the $20 switch.

Ask Someone You Trust to Check on Your Home

If you are going to be gone for an extended amount of time, you should have someone you trust look in on your home while you are away. Have them make sure nothing is leaking and your home is safe and sound. You may ask a neighbor you are close to or family that lives close by to keep an eye on your house while you’re gone.

Turn Off the Main Water Shut Off Valve

The best way to make sure you don’t experience any water damage while you are away is to shut off the main water valve to your home. That way, if there is a problem, your water lines won’t be full of unlimited amounts of water to spill over into your home.

Shut Off Water Supply Valves

In the summer, it may be hard to turn off your water main since you will likely be watering your lawn and other landscaping plants and flowers. You can still turn off water supply valves that supply water to toilets, sinks, ice makers, washing machines and other common culprits. All of these appliances have individual water supply stops that can shut off by turning them clockwise.
